I'm shocked! Shocked I tell you!

I dived back into the rightwing blogosphere tonight to see how things were shakin' down in the Littlegreenfootballs vs. Brussels Journal smack down that I mentioned a couple of days ago. I'm not sure who's winning, although reading more Brussels Journals articles than I have for a long time has reminded me of what a downright, strange political philosophy Paul Belien has (along with facial hair). It's easy to shout fascist as LGF has been doing a bit, but it more seems to be some form of ultra-reactionary conservative Catholicism. Of course there were plenty of links between the Catholic church and fascism in Franco-era Spain, and in Italy under Mussolini, but its a very different type of politics from your standard, racist, bully-boy, skinhead sort of European far rightism of the British BNP or the French Front National.

But what is amusing is the shock that some American conservatives are expressing on discovering their anti-Islam allies in Europe are actually, well, racist thugs. Have a look at the quote below from the delightfully named blog "THE OUTRAGED SPLEEN OF ZION" (slightly angry capitalization in the original), on their discovery of the "true nature" of Belgium's Vlaams Belang party, and its leader Filip Dewinter.

The White Power Neo Nazi movement needs to use people fighting jihad like us as political cover, they desperately need us to be the beard.
DeWinter is a major player in that world.
This is an international terrorist movement, just like jihad.

The White Power movement has risen on the ashes of 9/11 , it is rising concurrent to the rise of Jihad. It is a genuine, serious, international worldwide movement.
It is very organized.

DeWinter is in the thick of it and he happens to be a very major player with very major aspirations. He is a very ambitious boy.

They are intentionally planning to use your poor useful idiot ass as political cover.
Their sponsoring of the CounterJihad Europa conference was all about this.

They are in the process of BRANDING

If you told me this 13 days ago I would have laughed in your face.
I openly challenged everyone on LGF on it at the outset and did not want to believe it myself.

A list of codewords for what these MFers are now calling themselves worldwide is edifying and necessary, I have seen these words used plenty over the last 6 years never knowing what the hidden meaning behind most of them was:

  • Movements calling themselves "Nationalist"
  • Movements using the word "Sovereignty"
  • Movements calling themselves "Christian Identity" and other "Identity" parties and groups
  • Movements going by this title: [insert country name here] FIRST!
  • White Nationalism (also they use WN alot)
  • Paleoconservative (which is why they are obsessed with the word NEOCON)
  • Paleolibertarian (yes we can get to Ron Paul in 3 degrees)
  • The Patriotic Movement
  • Homogeneous Ethnic Communities
  • "Traditionalist" movements
  • "America [or insert country here] Renaissance" movements
  • The "New Right"
  • Populist
  • "Defensive Racism" movements
  • White Renaissance
I'm sorry Ms. Outraged Spleen?! You what?! You didn't know what the "hidden meaning" was behind an organisation that calls itself "White nationalist"?! What did you think it might mean? A particular interior decoration style in one country? And Mr DeWinter might be many things, an arse in particular, but he wasn't an international terrorist last time I looked.

And just an aside, my last post on this subject I was going to call "a fascist in a suit is still a fascist", but then realised that half the post was about the True Finns, who although suit wearing and populist rightwingers, aren't fascists, so I changed the title. But the pic below, from the Blokwatch site, made me laugh. Yep, that's our old friend Mr. DeWinter in the middle.

Hi Toby,

I just thought I'd mention that no one involved with the counterjihad movement espouses anything to do with "white nationalism". If they were to espouse such deplorable sentiments, they would be given the boot.

I have read the VB's political manifesto and it does not contain any objectionable content. In the event anything concrete does materialize, outside of the political manueverings of the Belgian Walloons, swift action will be taken by the CVF.

To see how far this smearing by association can go, I direct you to the following website:

http://card.wordpress.com/2007/03/05/is-barack-obamas-church-racist/

Since the minor brouhaha (no major media dwelled too much time on it), the website has since then been deleted (AFAIK) the most damaging portions.

http://www.tucc.org/about.htm

This in no way paints Obama as a rascist, but only having troublesome ties. Since the media refused to highlight any of this in any meanigful way, speaks loudly of the doublestandardness when it comes to racial issues.

Here is the orignial version:

Trinity United Church of Christ adopted the Black Value System written by the Manford Byrd Recognition Committee chaired by Vallmer Jordan in 1981. We believe in the following 12 precepts and covenantal statements. These Black Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Blacks are gathered. They must reflect on the following concepts:

1.) Commitment to God
2.) Commitment to the Black Community
3.) Commitment to the Black Family
4.) Dedication to the Pursuit of Education
5.) Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence
6.) Adherence to the Black Work Ethic
7.) Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect
8.) Disavowal of the Pursuit of “Middleclassness”
9.) Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the Black Community
10.) Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting Black Institutions
11.) Pledge allegiance to all Black leadership who espouse and embrace the Black Value System
12.) Personal commitment to embracement of the Black Value System.

No, I didn't know.
I knew nothing of that world.

How could I possibly know?

I'm American, I don't know or speak to any racist WN people, or any European fascists,

I have been concentrating so hard on studying the extreme left, Islam and the Jihad for the six years that I never saw it coming.

I suspect the same holds true of thousands of Americans just like me, and I also know that this is exactly what fascists like Dewinter are counting on.

Also you should know

I am not a mister

I think your knee jerk reaction to "All LGFers" is pretty hilarious given your obvious self evaluation as the swami of all fair mindedness.

Read the threads every now and then, maybe you will see who most of us really are.

Also, you say you are employed in international politics, so if you did not know this crap you should be horse whipped.

The rest of us are not diplomats or career political scientists we are just average people trying to survive this world ....
therefore spew education not ridicule

and thanks for the funny picture
I think I may have use for that one day soon as I intend to continue to write on this till someone more important than me starts to do so

Feel free to make post mocks of me all you want along the way, it's just one more link to the truth for brainwashed people like your first commenter to click on.

Have a good day

Smearing by association is something we all tend to try out once in while. Did you see Obama has also been in trouble for having homophobic gospel singers on tour with him?

The Dewinter and the fascists story is oddly reminiscent of a certain Swiss professor at Oxford and his 'links' to terrorism. If the Dept. of Homeland Security relies on LGF for its intelligence, then perhaps Dewinter won't be taking a winter holiday in Florida? I always wondered who that "are you or have you ever been a member of the Nazi party?" question was for. ;-)

Welcome Babbazee. I was being trite in the post, but did it seriously not strike you that amongst all the people vocally warning about the Muslim hoards descending on Europe, and hunting for fifth columnists amongst Muslim minorities here, there might be some who just don't like brown people much regardless of who they do or don't pray to?

Being racist is just sooo pre-9/11, now all sorts of slimeballs are sharpening their image - rebranding just like you said in your post - and saying "I'm not racist, it's their religion I hate, not their skin", my own dear country's BNP being a case in point.

I will correct the "Mr." reference, I hope Ms. is an acceptable alternative. and thank you for the suggestion that I am something else, but let me assure you that I am quite remarkably average. :-)

I'm more worried about what Tariq Ramadan says and continues to say in the present, than in any of his past ties.

Toby - Northern Light Blog said...

A bit like me and VB then! :-)

You should in that case read Olivier Roy's latest little book "Islam and Secularism" or something very like that. I keep reading late at night when already exhausted so its not all sinking in, but he notes specifically that whilst Ramadan is a fundamentalists, he is also secularist in the French sense. It's a fascinating argument, and fortunately its only 80 pages long so I'll be able to reread it when I'm not buried in PhD stuff.

sadly Toby it seriously did not strike me.

I don't know European politics and I thought it was a toothless redneck in America / thing of the EU past issue

I was insane to think that - I honestly did not know
and neither did A LOT OF PEOPLE!

WOWZA!

Thanks for being cordial

I like this bit:
"We cannot determine the secret motivations of either bloggers or politicians, so instead of seeing all statements as a cover-up of true intent, we treat them simply as statements."
Unless they are Muslims of course.

Is that the best that you can come up with Toby? That?

So which is it Toby? Have Muslims in the States like CAIR & MAS MPAC ever deounced Hams and Hezbollah as terrorist groups and that the intentional targeting of Israeli civilians as crimes against humanity?

The SD & VB have. That's far more than the slippery tongued charaltan Tarqi Ramadan, who only wants a moritorium on the stoning of women.
